In a significant milestone for Spain’s digital infrastructure, Blackberry AIF has secured the first-ever grid connection for a 120-megawatt (MW) data center in the province of Córdoba. This achievement positions the facility as the largest data center in Southern Europe, marking a pivotal advancement in the region’s technological landscape.

This development is particularly noteworthy given the current limitations in Spain’s primary data center hubs—Madrid, Barcelona, and Aragón—where grid saturation has hindered the expansion of new facilities. Blackberry AIF’s innovative approach involves establishing data centers in regions with abundant energy availability, thereby circumventing these constraints.

The Córdoba facility is part of Blackberry AIF’s broader strategy to develop 23 interconnected data centers across Spain. These centers are designed to support high-performance computing applications, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, by ensuring low-latency connections and sustainable energy usage.

A key aspect of this strategy is the integration of renewable energy sources. The Córdoba data center will utilize solar energy as a secondary power source, aligning with environmental standards and reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.

As José Mora, CEO of BAIF, articulated in a previous interview: «We do not follow hubs; we create them.» This philosophy underscores the company’s proactive role in shaping Spain’s digital infrastructure, fostering regional development, and setting new benchmarks in the data center industry.
